Virtual reality: The way of the future?

No, im not talking about just staring at a computer screen and manipulating a little character. I'm talking about fully immersive VR: goggles, treadmills, maybe some kind of frame that would support you and allow you to do more than just walk around, maybe even a full body suit that uses electrical impulses to simulate touch. The tech might be far off, but just think of the possibilities: Medical training with no fear of hurting your patient, dangerous activities like rock climbing, skydiving or combat with no danger, the ability to visit places without leaving the comfort of your home, to conduct business face to face without actually being there, to visit relatives whenever you want, to understand complex concepts like atomical science or anatomy from the inside. Not to mention an entirely new generation of gaming, based on actual skill. But is this too much to hope for?

I hope not entirely, it has its place but I like real ,solid objects and sentient beings to relate to. If we get too dependent on technology when it fails and it always does how would we relate then?

Future Video Games

A Gamer's Plea

With video game technology advancing so fast and so far from where it started, one can't help but to entertain the idea of where it's going to go from here. After all, that is part of a larger creative process and we'd like to think that our writings contribute even in some small way. One of the earliest video games that we can remember is Commodore's "Pong." But never did we think the industry would have reached the point where it is today.  One thing is for sure however, and that's the gaming is pushing full force ahead.

Today we did a little fantasizing to see where our imagination and desires would take us.
The following offers some suggestions of what could be done short of a little thing called, "impossible."

We're a little intrigued with the "Sun Game Glasses" idea. Wearing a pair of dark sunglasses and using the technology implemented by Nintendo's "Wii" system, we could literally watch a game take place right before our eyes and then interact with it using a device that's about the size of a pen. Since this isn't exactly a new idea, we're curious to watch what develops from University of South Australia's 'ARQuake' project1 - a springboard for this kind of gaming to develop in the near future for sure.

Another cool idea we'd like to see erupt within the gaming industry is the ability to talk to the characters inside a game. Some games allow players to textually speak to game characters already, but we'd like to see this pushed a little further. We'd like to be able to orally interact with characters: ask questions, joke around, warn and speak to them as if we were speaking to another human being. And we'd like to hear these characters talk back! It's the ultimate artificial intelligence opportunity and although it would probably be years before this technology would be available on a wide scale, we're sure it would be a hit.

Will we ever get to the point where we can play inside a simulated environment the way the characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation could play? Virtual reality is getting close, but the reality of the simulation is gone the moment we put on the silly-looking goggles and gloves. In order for simulation of this sort to work, there has to be as little a barrier between gamers and the game as possible. We don't what to just think we're inside a game, we want to feel that we're inside a game and to be honest, we don't want to have to go somewhere outside our home to do so.

The television or computer screen will suffice for now, but in the future, we're going to want to be surrounded with the elements that make gaming the wonder that it is today. We're going to want to transform our dens or bedrooms into a virtual alien ship or simulated jungle. In short, we want a new world.

One possible obstacle to bringing this fantasy into our living rooms is public acceptance. Would the public be ready for such a high level of entertainment? And could the public handle it? Immediately following Nintendo's Wii release, customers were ready to complain that they wanted their old controller back! So as with any new development, there will surely be unintended consequences and although we're gung-ho for these types of advances, we also share concerns about the impact it would have on an audience that isn't "virtually ready."

As a result, we can certainly envision a few laws introduced that restricted the use of our fantasy gaming. We already have some laws that attempt the same now and in our opinion, that's a good thing. The last thing we want to encounter in gaming is physical harm - especially when we're trying to enjoy virtual entertainment!

Good

We bought the helmet for our 12 year old son and it is a little big. We added some padding at the top and that fixed it.

Size is key.

by John Matthews from on 2010-06-01
The product over all is good, the concept of a full paintball helmet is awesome but if you have a larger head you may not want to buy this product, I can fit it but because it is tight the plastic at the top digs into your head. I will still use it because its all i have for now but heed the warning for comfort.

I would not buy this helmet if I knew then what I know now.

by Duffman from Philadelphia, PA on 2010-04-16
The helmet is poorly made. I have a normal size head for a 5'10" man and I find there is way to much pressure applied to the sides of my head. It gives me a headache after awhile and even with all of that pressue the helmet feels to loose for fast paced action. Also the foam around the nose pushes down and retricts the airflow going in and out of my nose. I have tried every adjustment imaginable but it is still uncomfortable. In addition the button snaps feel as though they barley snap on. It's a miracle that the plastic post snaps that hold the visor in place do not break when you disassemble the helmet to clean it.I don't understand how this helmet received so many positive reviews when it is such crap. It is my hope that this review will save someone from wasting time and money trying this helmet out.

Great Airsoft Protection

by Markus from Kansas City on 2009-02-13
This helmet has it all... built-in safety goggles, total head protection, and a sun visor. It fits very comfortably on the eyes and nose, and the head strap adusts very easily to fit any size head. The only drawback is the chinstrap which is very thin and tends to feel very uncomfortable after prolonged use. I usually wear it without the chinstrap. If you're looking for total face/head protection, this is a fantastic choice.

Full protection is a must!

by Ben Howell from Idaho Falls,Idaho on 2009-01-16
Best piece of equiptment that I ever bought after the gun I mean! You definitly want top and back of the head protection! As some people play to hurt others only!Having a bottle of de-fogger is a must too, this thing will fog up like a S.O.B.Did`nt expect head impacts to sound like a baseball bat hitting a 6by6 foot sheet of plastic, its pretty loud inside this thing. The helmet does`nt touch your head like I thought at first.Instead there is a 1-2 inch space around you,so it feels like your only wearing some ski goggles. Its kind of tricky to look down the paintball guns sights with this on though,so I mainly just shoot from the waist.

AWESOME MASK!!!!

by garyz from on 2010-07-11
I recently bought this paintball mask and i read a lot of reviews on it before i bought it, some people said it fogged and some said it didn't, some don't like to look of the mask or other petty personal opinion dislikes. I am writing this review on the performance of the mask only not the looks. I live in St.Louis and it is a very muggy humid city, the first day I used this mask it was over 90 degrees and very humid and I was playing woodsball and doing a lot of running and sliding and dodging. So first I would like to say that this mask DID NOT FOG AT ALL, I am 28 years old and i wear glasses and this mask was comfortable and felt nice, I almost didn't even know I was wearing it, I had no problems with any features of this mask AT ALL. Bottom line this is an all around GREAT mask and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great mask that fits good, fits very good over glasses (if you trim the foam it fits better then if you don't) looks good, does not fog, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, so in short BUY THIS MASK!! Its AWESOME!!!!

Anti-Fog airsoft mask.

by Anon from on 2010-07-06
Shipping was very fast and as advertised the mask has not fogged up once not even during intense sweating.

Almost perfect.

by John Cain from USA on 2010-06-21
The lens hasn't fogged up yet. The goggles are removable, although it's difficult. My only gripes are that, the same thing for the visor (once put on), and it's difficult to aim down my red dot sight while wearing (but this is probably true for all paintball masks). Other than that, it's comfortable, the plastic feels hard and strong, and for under $20, you can't go wrong.

good but not perfect

by Noah .L from California, USA on 2010-06-18
It protects really well and it does not fog up like it is advertises to do but the anti-fog coating kinda blurs your vision. It doesn't effect to much but if your a sniper or your enemy's and friends look alike (as they sometimes do in a public field. Overall though this is a very good mask FOR THE PRICE but there is still some room for improvement. If your a serious player than you might want to invest in something more,

Great Mask

by Yams from Dom.Rep on 2010-05-31
Played for 6hrs strait and didn't fog at all. I would recommend it to all.

Extreme Rage Paintball anti-fog not-so extreme

by John Lo from saint paul, mn on 2009-04-21
The product works but not as good as I would like it too. I am an avid bike rider and I had to constantly reapply the spray otherwise my sunglasses would fog up. Most times it only fogs up around where the lenses meet the rim and not so much on the lenses where you need to see. But the protection doesn't last long, you have to clean your glasses the next time you want to use them. Otherwise they tend to get dirty very easily and will fog up instantly. I gave it three stars because of the price and the product works as advertise, only not to the extreme.

No Problems Yet

by happyirish from on 2009-02-24
I live in NJ and the humidity is intense here during the summer months. I use this product instead of a regular lens cleaner to help my glasses from not fogging up. I haven't had a problem associated to my glasses fogging up as of yet.

Foggy morning..

by Matt & Dana from Shakopee, MN USA on 2007-03-28
I use this product for anti-fog on shop glasses and swimming goggles. It seems to do the trick and was priced right.I cannot comment on how well it controls rage.

In order to prevent fog to form on the inner side of your goggle, you want to buy two layer lenses goggle. Because if you buy one layer lens, when you are snow skiing and the lens is cold, water vapor will condense on the goggle lens. If you buy two layer, the inner layer will be warm and outer layer will be cold, hence inner layers water vapor will not condense on your goggle. Polycarbonate can block all UV light transmission, almost exactly 400 nm. This can help prevent problems such as snow blindness and cataracts.
